Overview

This expedition-style trek is one of the most remote and rewarding in Bhutan, leading through pristine forests, deep river valleys, alpine meadows, yak herder settlements, and sacred mountain landscapes. The route brings you close to Gangkar Puensum—Bhutan’s highest and unclimbed peak—and culminates in the serene Dur Tshachu Hot Springs, revered for their healing properties.

Day-by-Day Highlights

Drive past scenic villages and temples to reach Khagthang military camp. Permit check at camp.

Trek through dense forest, side streams, and flood-dam protections to reach Gophu/Gombu.

Trail ascends through bamboo to alpine forest with views of Tsambar Brakhsam. Camp near remote Tshampa army base.

Climb via Tsawuu village and ‘Trail of a Million Stones’ to the high camp at Shingo.

Pass yak herder camps and alpine settlements to reach base camp near Gangkar Puensum.

Optional hikes:

    • Towards Gangkar Puensum’s southeast ridge (via Buurtsam)
    • Ridge walk to cairns and prayer flags overlooking the glacier valleys

Retrace your route back to Tshampa; alternate shorter camp at Tsawuu if needed.

Cross Bumthang Chhu and ascend steeply through forests and yak camps to alpine lake Thole Tsho.

Climb over Thole La Pass (4,732m) and descend into the dramatic valley of Thashi Chhu. Camp at Thashisa.

A shorter walking day; optional to continue to nearby Julitsho for camping.

Cross Julila Pass, descend through blue sheep territory to the sacred Dur Hot Springs.

Enjoy natural hot springs, or explore upstream near the glacial streams and Mandge River.

Steep uphill return over Julila to the Tshochenchen campsite.

Walk down through mixed forest and small hamlets including Kurpang and Lungsum.

Final descent through forest and meadows, crossing footbridges and tributaries. End trek at Dur and drive to Jakar (approx. 1 hr).
