Day-by-Day Highlights
Trek to before Khakthang army camp, 2,834m/9,297ft – 5 1/2 hours.
Drive from Jakar to Tangbi, then trek along the river through farmland, temples, and hamlets to camp near the Khakthang army post. You’ll see historic ruins and cross several footbridges as you gradually leave civilization and enter forested areas.
Trek through pristine forest alongside a fast-flowing river, ascending gently within a narrow gorge. Cross wooden bridges and pass campsites before reaching Gophu/Kuphu camp.
Continue trekking beside roaring rapids and towering cliffs, passing yak meadows and an ancient temple at a valley junction. Visit a remote army outpost before camping at Tsawuu or nearby Tsampa.
rek 4½ hours to Shingo (4,209m), passing through forests, yak gates, meadows, and impressive rock cliffs. This shorter day aids acclimatisation. At Shingo, experience traditional yak herding culture and optional short local explorations.
Trek 4 hours to Bamurpa (4,490m), enjoying stunning views of high peaks including Melunghi Gang (7,000m). The landscape transitions to alpine meadows, boulder fields, and yak herder huts. Afternoon at leisure with opportunities for photography and star gazing.
Explore a 6-hour out-and-back route beyond Buurtsam, reaching around 4,800m altitude. Gain first views of Gangkar Punsum and surrounding peaks while observing local wildlife like Himalayan pheasants and blue sheep. The route follows the river with some pathfinding required. Return to Bamurpa camp.
Trek 5 hours to Zhigeyphu Valley (4,994m), a remote and rarely visited area near Gangkar Punsum. Cross a cold river, ascend sandy zigzags, and reach the valley entrance with spectacular mountain views. Settle into camp near yak herder huts with extraordinary vistas.
Explore Zhigeyphu Valley with a gradual climb to ridges between 5,100m and 5,400m, offering panoramic views of possible mountain passes, multiple colorful lakes, and unique alpine flora. Return to camp after enjoying this pristine and mystical landscape.
Optional day for further exploration—either climb a nearby rocky peak, investigate side valleys, or attempt passes leading toward Mangde Chhu. Plan carefully to return safely before dark.
Trek 5½ hours descending to a forest clearing beyond Shingo Bridge (4,072m). Stay on the right riverbank, stopping for lunch near Sedi, and reach camp near the main bridge.
Short 3½ hour trek to Tsampa (3,720m). Pass yak huts, sulphurous springs reputed for healing, and forested trails. Visit the monastery and camp by the river.
Trek 5½ hours to Tsho Shap (4,420m) via steep zigzags and a beautiful valley lined with rhododendron and wildlife. Pass army posts, yak huts, and cross a col before arriving at a lakeside camp renowned for its magical atmosphere.
Cross the remote Thole La Pass at 4,766m, a route seldom traveled by outsiders. Enjoy spectacular panoramic views including Kula Kangri in Tibet and vast Bhutanese valleys. Descend steeply 427m into a grand valley, passing remarkable rock formations and spotting potential wildlife prints like Blue Sheep or even snow leopard tracks. After crossing Labrong Bridge, continue to the secluded campsite at Tashi Sa.
Trek 6½ hours descending through dense jungle towards Bumthang. Pass a junction leading to alternate routes but continue on the main trail with river cliff paths, wooden shelters, and forest ascents. Reach the final high camp at Chokchum, perched on a clearing beside the river. This is the last night under canvas.
Trek 4 hours through pristine forest and river valleys with some challenging muddy patches. Encounter farmland, villages, and signs of civilization before reaching Dur, marked by a suspension bridge and large chorten. Perform traditional Koras to honor the gods for a safe journey. Transfer by vehicle to the lodge in Jakar, concluding the trek.
