Day-by-Day Highlights

Begin with a short drive to Tangbi and start trekking along the river valley. Cross a suspension bridge and walk for about 3 hours through forests and meadows to reach Ngang Lhakhang (Swan Temple), built in the 15th century by the Tibetan lama Namkha Samdrup. Legend says Guru Rinpoche visited this sacred site.

Overnight: Camp near Ngang Lhakhang

Ascend gradually through pine, bamboo, and rhododendron forest to the Phephe La pass, a prime musk deer habitat. After crossing the pass, descend past summer grazing meadows. You may choose a direct route or a scenic ridge trail passing Tendigang village. The final stretch leads through Tahung and Kherab villages to the base of Ugyen Choling Palace.

Overnight: Camp below Ugyen Choling Palace

Begin with a visit to the historic Ugyen Choling Palace and museum, linked to Longchen Rabjam and later Bhutanese nobility. Trek uphill through meadows and pine forest, eventually reaching a ridge with occasional views of the Tang Valley. Camp in a meadow near Phokpe Lhakhang. Watch for Himalayan Monals and grazing yaks.

Overnight: Camp at Phokpe

A long and challenging day over Rodang La, historically a major trade route. The trail ascends through ancient moss-draped rhododendron forest. The pass offers views of the eastern Himalayas, including Gangkar Puensum on clear days. Descend on steep, rocky trails with dramatic cliffs. Be cautious—the trail is often slippery and rarely used. Arrive at Pemi meadow with a ruined guesthouse.

Overnight: Camp at Pemi

Descend through dense forest, eventually reaching meadows with views of Khaine Lhakhang and Ungaar village. Continue downhill to the Noyurgang Chu, crossing a suspension bridge to reach Ungaar. From here, drive to Autsho in Lhuentse.

Overnight: Hotel in Autsho
