This 10-day journey takes you from the heart of Paro to the isolated valleys of Gasa and Laya, offering an intimate look into the lifestyle of Bhutan’s highlanders.
DETAILED ITINERARY
Arrive at Paro International Airport and meet your guide. Transfer to Thimphu (approx. 1 hour).
En route visit Tachog Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple built by Thangtong Gyalpo.
Stop at Gagyel Lhundrup Weaving Centre, known for exquisite royal textiles.
Visit Tashichhoe Dzong (after 5 PM), housing the King’s office and the Central Monastic Body.
Explore Thimphu’s cultural highlights:
Memorial Chorten, built in honor of the Third King.
Buddha Dordenma, one of the world’s largest seated Buddha statues.
Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan’s national animal.
Green Weaving Center, empowering women through nettle-based textile arts.
Visit Bhutan Post Office in Thimphu to create personalized stamps.
Optional visit to Kaja Throm or the Craft Bazaar, showcasing local products.
Drive to Punakha via scenic Dochula Pass (3,140m), offering views of the Himalayas.
Stop at Druk Wangyal Chortens (108 stupas).
Visit Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple.
Visit Punakha Dzong, Bhutan’s former capital and royal fortress.
Continue to Gasa and visit Gasa Tshachu, natural hot springs known for healing properties.
Journey into the highlands to Laya, one of Bhutan’s most remote villages (3,840m).
Leisure time to explore the village and its Himalayan backdrop.
Attend the Royal Highland Festival at 4,000m elevation:
Traditional music, dances, cultural showcases.
Auley (epic oral song traditions) and Buelwa (ritual gift offering).
Highland animal competitions: yaks, horses, mastiffs.
Morning: Continue experiencing the festival.
Afternoon: Return journey to Gasa and drive back to Punakha.
Visit Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu river.
In Paro, explore Ta Dzong (National Museum) and Rinpung Dzong, a historic fortress.
Early hike to the famous Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest).
Non-hikers can visit Kyichu Lhakhang, Satsam Chorten, or Namgay Artisanal Brewery.
Post-hike: Leisure shopping in Paro town.
Transfer to Paro Airport.
