The Dance of the Ox: Wangdue Tshechu’s Spiritual Legacy
Festival Highlight: Wangdue Phodrang Tshechu featuring the Raksha Mangcham (Dance of the Ox)
Wangdue Tshechu, set against the dramatic backdrop of central Bhutan, is an immersive spiritual journey into the heart of Bhutanese tradition. The festival’s defining performance—the Dance of the Ox (Raksha Mangcham)—dramatizes the spiritual journey after death and the moral consequences of one’s actions. Combined with sacred relics, thunderous chants, and sudden shifts in weather believed to reflect divine activity, this Tshechu is both mystical and deeply moving.
