“Wings of the Himalayas: A Bird-Watching & Eco-Tourism Journey through Bhutan”

Day-by-Day Highlights

Arrive in Paro, enjoying stunning aerial views of the Himalayas. Upon arrival, your BTCL guide will welcome you. Birding begins along the Paro River, targeting species such as the monotypic Ibisbill, Brown Dipper, and Wallcreeper. While focusing on these specialties, you’ll also encounter a range of more common species.

Early morning birding in Jigme Dorji National Park, the finest birding site near Thimphu. Look for species like the Satyr Tragopan, Great and Brown Parrotbill, Slender-billed Scimitar Babbler, Laughingthrushes, Red-headed Bullfinch, Scarlet Finch, Hume’s Bush Warbler, and Yellow-rumped Honeyguide among others.
Return to Paro in the evening, with stops to search for any missed species.

Begin with a sunrise stop at Dochu La Pass (3,150m) for birding opportunities—look for Fire-tailed Myzornis, Rufous Sibia, and more. Visit Lamperi Botanical Park, then continue via Pele La Pass to Trongsa, with a cultural stop at Chendebji Chorten.

Scenic drive through prime forests to Tingtibi, an excellent region for Golden Langurs, Red-headed Trogon, and Bay Woodpecker. Option to attend the local Bird Festival if scheduled.

Morning visit to the Bird Festival—featuring cultural performances, exhibitions, and birding clubs. Afternoon drive to Panbang, stopping at the twin waterfalls. The approach to Panbang brings increasing forest density and heightened birding potential. Watch for Tawny Fish Owl, Golden-fronted Leafbird, Common Green Magpie, and Collared Falconet.

Bird along the Panbang–Nganglam road, rich in hornbill diversity. Spot Black-backed Forktail, Rufous-backed Sibia, Long-tailed Broadbill, Ruddy Kingfisher, Grey-lored Broadbill, and potentially rare species like the Green Cochoa or Grey Peacock-Pheasant.
Optional river rafting (inflatable or bamboo) and cultural program in the evening.

Drive via Tama La Pass, stopping for Oriental Honey Buzzard, Coral-billed Scimitar Babbler, White-breasted Parrotbill, and Beautiful Nuthatch. Spotlighting after dinner may reveal Oriental Bay Owl, Brown Hawk Owl, and other nocturnal birds.

Arrive in Punakha, visiting the historic Punakha Dzong. Evening birding around the hotel for localized species such as Slender-billed Oriole.

En route to Paro, stop at Menchuna in search of Ward’s Trogon if missed earlier. Another birding stop at Dochula Pass offers a chance to see Parrotbills, Fire-tailed Myzornis, and Slender-billed Scimitar Babbler. Revisit the Paro River basin for any remaining target species.
